Night Terrors

So I'm no medical expert. I can't explain any mumbo jumbo medical terms for Night Terrors. All I can do is explain first-hand what it feels like to have one.

I started having Night Terrors when I was in third grade. But these ones I would not remember. My mom would wake up to me screaming bloody murder and she'd have to come calm me down. The next morning she would talk to me about it and I would have absolutely no clue what she was talking about.

Then they stopped until I was a teenager. They started out slow and escalated to a point where I was having them almost every night. Now to describing them...

One of the first ones happened when I was 13 or so. I had I woke up and looked above my head (mind you, I'm lying down) to see a man's hand coming out from under my bed. Freaked me out! I used to be super paranoid that someone would hide under my bed. I'd always run and jump onto the bed when I was younger. Didn't stop that until about 17 or so! Then there was the one where my parents were standing on the other side of my room staring at me and I started screaming at them asking them what they were doing. That was pretty freaky. At this point I had them every 4 months or so.

But when I turned 16 they got very bad, to the point where I was having them almost every night. I was scared to go to sleep! One of the ones I had involved me waking up to two very large men with long blond hair standing at the end of me bed. I screamed like crazy until my mom came downstairs and calmed me down (she was scared to come downstairs, didn't know what was going on! shows how much she loves me that she came anyways). I had a lot that involved creepy guys trying to kill me. There was one where a man carrying a surgical tray with scalpals and whatnot on it was coming at me.

Then there would be minor ones, like the one where there was a 3 foot spider crawling on the wall. They would definantly range from super freaky to just kind of freaky. But all of them were freaky.

What seems to be happening when I'm having a night terror is that I'm half asleep, half awake. I will think that I'm awake, because my eyes are open, and I'm looking around my room. But my dream will become real and it will be in my room too. It seems as real as anything. But while I think that I'm awake I'm also very much asleep, where I'm not controlling what I'm screaming or what I'm saying. Because there is no way I could scream in real life the way I do when I'm having a night terror.

And afterwards, when I do wake up, I just start crying uncontrollably. And I mean, literally, uncontrollably. It's almost as if I'm sleeping for that part too, though I'm not. My whole body seems to shut down. Luckily I have my husband there to console me! He's been very patient with me.

I haven't had any Night Terrors in awhile, and I'm hopinh that they're gone for good. So, if you know anyone that has Night Terrors, please be patient with them and realize that it is completely uncontrollable.

I hope that this has been helpful for someone. Hopefully they'll understand someone, or themselves better.
